We live in an ever-changing world of screens. From our groceries, to our favorite movies, everything is a tap away…Digital devices have certainly made our lives easier; we are more connected today, have access to more information than ever before, but with all the scrolling and swiping and double tapping, come a host of health issues too!
Let’s talk about how all this screen time is affecting one of the most important organs of our body- our eyes!
Eyes are our window to the world, and with all the blue-light being emitted from our electronics, it can make the eyes blurry, dry, strained, cause cataracts, macular degeneration and a myriad of other issues.
So, what really is blue light?
Blue light is a shorter wavelength light (compared to other strains) and hence contains more energy. In large amounts, high energy light- like the Sun’s UV rays can cause ample harm to the skin and the eyes. Which is why eye experts are now vary of the blue light emitted by our electronics.
Good or evil?
Sun is a natural source of Blue light, and exposure to natural light is actually beneficial for both the mind and the body- it can boost alertness, alleviate the mood and help with anxiety and depression. But too much blue light from artificial sources, especially during the night can cause a strain on the eyes, fatigue, headaches and other long term irreversible effects on the eyes.
It can also interfere with the body’s biological clock.
How do the Blue Light blocking glasses work?
Almost all the blue light passes through the cornea of our eyes and reaches the retina. Studies suggest that continuous retinal damage can cause a host of issues and in extreme cases, also cause total loss of vision.
The blue light blocking glasses have a special filter in their lenses that block/ absorb the blue light from getting through. These glasses can reduce glare and stress on the eyes while one is looking at a screen for extended periods of time.
Since you can’t avoid blue-light, protecting your eyes with glasses is one step towards improving your eye-health. Experts recommend taking regular breaks while working on laptops and desktops, reducing screen-time before bed for a proper sleep and getting regular eye exams.
